Preston played with the Mothers from 1967 until 1969, where he can be heard on the albums Absolutely Free, We're Only In It For The Money, Cruising With Ruben & The Jets, Uncle Meat, Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh. When he met Zappa he described him as: "(.) kind of a nerd, but he was smart enough to disguise that by street talk and being into R&B.".
